Match the event, market, selection and settlement rules. Similar team names or prices are not enough. A stake calculation only helps after the two bets cover the same thing.
The four-part check
- Event: same teams or players, competition and start time. Names can be abbreviated, so verify the fixture.
- Market: same bet type. A 90-minute football result is different from qualifying for the next round.
- Selection: back and lay the same outcome, such as Team A to win. The lay is already the opposite side of that selection.
- Rules: check how voids, postponements, extra time and dead heats are handled on each site.
A quick example
You back Team A to win at the bookmaker in a 90-minute result market. On the exchange, you lay Team A to win in the 90-minute result market for the same fixture. If you instead lay Team A to qualify, a draw at full time followed by an extra-time win could make both bets lose.
Read both bet slips before confirming either one. If one side has changed, stop and recalculate. If only part of the lay matches, do not assume you are fully covered. Record the matched amount and use the bet recovery tool or calculate the uncovered position before doing anything else.
